Woodcarving

Aukan Woodcarving

Woodcarving, for which the word Tembe is also used. It means the beauty of objects, through carvings and cut-outs of figures. All sorts of things are decorated, for example: spoons, combs, plates, house fronts, parrots and drums. From the teenage years, children learn the craft of woodcarving, so that eventually all adults can do it a little or very well. Those who are very good at it are therefore held in high. Men do most of the carving. Women carve as well but only with specific objects, such as gourds and combs. A set of carving tools is often used for woodcarving: chisels, cutters and beaters. Woodcarving used to involve engravings and painted motifs, today – due to outside influence – sculptures are often carved as well. Aukan wood carvings can be recognized, among other things, by brightly colored finishes with lacquer paint. But also by the fine finish that almost looks like a three-dimensional art form.
