About Fositen Gudu

The Diitabiki Museum Fositen Gudu is a museum of and for the local community. The museum shows the strength and creativity of the Aukan Maroons, one of the groups of descendants of slave-makers who fled Suriname.

‘Fositen gudu’ means riches of the past. The motto of the museum, ‘New na e meki hau, hau e meki new’ means: the new comes from the old – we cannot understand the present without knowing our past.

With this museum I want to pass on the rich culture and history of the Aukan Maroons to our young people. The knowledge of their history and culture gives them strength and pride and makes them more resilient. The awareness of our past and heritage connects our community.
