About Gaanman

Gaanman In De Collectie Van Diitabiki Museum Fositen Gudu
The Aukan community was acknowledged by the colonial ruler from 1760 onwards. The governmental tradition within the Aukan community gives a clear structure: At the head of the community is the Gaanman, he is appointed for life by the people and is also recognized and sworn in by the Surinamese government. Below the Gaanman are the Kabitens (village heads) and finally the Basiyas (councilors). Once a year the Gaanman, the Kabitens and the Basiyas come together during the Stam Lanti. There they discuss and decide on the policy for the coming year. There is also a local government, the Lo Lanti (council), which consists of the Kabitens and Basiyas of the village. When there is an important decision to be made, long consultations are held in a democratic manner and the whole village is involved. The Lo Lanti is then assisted in its advice by a council of older wise men.
